Number Analogy Abstract

Number Analogy is a crucial step in solving questions on reasoning ability. The candidates are asked to identify and point out relationships, similarities or differences, and dissimilarities in a series or between groups of numbers. In abstract number analogy, certain relationships can be used like product of prime numbers, product of odd numbers or even numbers, adding 1 to a number and many more.

Following are some categories of abstract number analogies.

Example 1 : Product of Prime Numbers :  6 : 15:: 35 : ?

a) 30       b) 40        c) 77         d) 80

Solution:  The first few prime numbers (all the prime numbers less than 100) are:  2, 3, 5, 7, 11, 13, 17 etc. 2 X 3 = 6, 3 X 5 = 15, 5 X 7 = 35.

Hence, 7 X 11 = 77. Correct option is (c) i.e. 77

Example 2 : Product of Odd Numbers  :-  15 : 35:: 63 : ?

a) 30       b) 99       c) 77         d) 100

Solution : The first few odd numbers (all the odd numbers less than 100) are:  3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13, 15, 17 etc. 3 X 5 = 15, 5 X 7 = 35, 7 X 9 = 63.

Hence, 9 X 11 = 99. Correct option is 90 (b) i.e. 99.

Example 3 : Product of Even Numbers  :-  8 : 24:: 48 : ?

a) 80       b) 100       c) 120         d) 140

Solution : The first few even numbers (all the even numbers less than 100) are:  2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16 etc. 2 X 4 = 8, 4 X 6 = 24, 6 X 8 = 48. Hence 8 X 10 = 80. Correct option is (a) i.e. 80

Example 4 : Identify the missing term : 8 : 14:: 20 : ?

a) 26       b) 30       c) 40         d) 100

Solution : Identify the terms in the series. Use n : n + k: where "k" is a number.

8 + 6 = 14,  14 + 6 = 20,  Hence 20 + 6 = 26. In this question "k" is a constant term whose value is 6. Correct option is (a) i.e. 26.

Example 5 : Identify the missing term : 8 : 32:: 10 : ?

a) 60       b) 30       c) 50         d) 70

Solution : Identify the terms in the series. Use n : large frac{n^2}{2}  : where "n" is the first number.

large 8:frac{8^2}{2}=frac{64}{2}=32,  Hence, we can find this value for n = 10 ,  large 10:frac{10^2}{2}=frac{100}{2}=50

Correct option is (c) i.e. 50
